I saw this sign, well, I’ve seen this sign probably hundreds of times as I’ve driven various routes from here to there, but I saw it again the other day while heading north on Highway 5 from L.A. to Redwood City and it read completely different than it had previously. It read as an invitation.

My heart beats at its steadiest when it is pumping to the rhythm of the road moving under my wheels. My veins, like pistons, pounding in precision as the scenery zips by in a a blur of green tones, brown tones, a glimpse of the ocean or anguine coastline. I’m at my most content, my happiest, my most blissful when I am in between two places, in between a previous location and a new destination. I wish so strongly to soak it all up, for there to no longer be any image of myself, but for myself to become a sort of mirror ball of all the things I see, all the things my eyes drink in. I wish only to project the very nature in which I - which we all - exist. In anonymity and awe of the world that surrounds me. To give credit where credit is due.

I feel as though the only change in the majority of my days is the change in the size of the screen I stare at. I want, earnestly, to divorce myself from the world of people, at least for a little while, people moving along, single file, completing tasks, pressing repeat on the cycle. I need to unload.

I was recently discussing my recent solo trip through Sedona, AZ with some friends and a kind old man heard me telling the story of camping, being harassed by bears and badgers and skunks and being so alone. I was, to put it simply, at the very mercy of the elements. He asked me “Could you feel it, could you feel the Earth?” No one had every asked me that before, they always asked, more or less, how I felt while I was out there. And I stopped and thought, ‘yes, I could it feel it, I could feel the earth,’ and how little it was concerned with whether I existed or not.

He saw the full moon in its eternal and ethereal loneliness where it hung unveiled in the sky a mute witness to the comings and goings of the strange lives on the the planet so far below. What slow banks of clouds had now rolled off and disappeared into some other form in the thin fabric of the quiet night air. It was bright and immense over all creation, that which slept and that which lied awake. In the distance thin pillars of night birds left their nests and climbed heavenward towards its deep yellow electric grow and He felt in him that same force that pulls the tide in with it in an ageless bond that nothing could break and that moves the hearts of wolves to aching with their necks arched and their eyes closed and their sorrowful howl tearing a void in any beating heart and that stitches it up one and the same and that speaks solely to those kindred ears that have the will to hear it.

The Flaming LIps (consistently in my top 5 favorite bands) played a secret show at the Nike Montalban Theater in L.A. while I was crashing there. They had a question and answer session followed by a short set of new songs from Embryonic then a meet and greet where they signed posters and took pictures. This was a great late night in Los Angeles.

And this is one of the happiest moments of my life.

The Grand Canyon/ Sedona

The Grand Canyon lying vast and wild like an open wound in the earth itself and containing within it like an almanac all the histories and trials of the world in it's making. Every layer defined and separate from one another and each owing itself to the next and to the last. It's unending wildness incalculable by any measurement of man, for there is nothing near its equal to measure it against. It holds in itself the same mystery an awe that exists in the darkness and emptiness of space; A dual nature to it that is at once inspiring and alienating. A sense that nothing could be more unconcerned or indifferent to our, as humans, very existence. A undeniable knowledge that it has been there since long before our first breaths, and our first evolutions and our wars and our victories and that it will continue to be when all we know is dust and ash and ruin and forgotten. Places like The Grand Canyon and Space all at once challenge and somehow confirm the existence of God, or a God. Places that continue to change and destroy and rebuild themselves in a continuous and unceasing cycle of self perpetuation that will run until time has no meaning and there is no means left to recorded it and the very idea of these places being somehow pre-rendered for humans themselves and solely has vanished because we too will be gone and all remembrance of such beauty is gone with us. However, it also may be thought if such places were not made by the very hands of God than nothing has been, and nothing ever will be. A pulse runs through such things that too runs through the bloodlines of all mankind, some may not know it and some may never feel it or have a chance to fall in synch to it, but it is true that there are at times very real, very primal moments when a rhythm can be heard and a harmony can be felt resonating aloud and man and earth and blood and stone are all very much one and originated from the very same air and dirt. At these places, the depths can only be measured by the soul.

A Night In The Desert

Leaving Albuquerque, New Mexico heading to Flagstaff, Arizona. Five hours of driving in the dark through the desert.

The vast dome of space rimmed the earth at every edge of the horizon and there was blackness so deep that one would believe there was nothing else, no recognizable light on earth save the small lights on the highway that were very few and far between. He had never seen a night sky so sprent with stars that it was easier to count the darkness. A great blue meteor passed overhead and burned and broke apart and left pieces of itself behind as it traveled westward into its final absolvance. The silty white streak of the milky way hung sprawled out across that incommensurable void like a net reaping more stars and more planets to be harvested elsewhere in the imponderable heavens beyond.

On the I-40 soft shoulder looking north over the vast ranch lands of the Texas Panhandle.

In the distance he could see where curtains of rain were falling over the flat and empty country like the thin tendrils of wet oil streaks on an immense canvas. Soon enough he too was within the storm and the heavy drops pounded the hood of the car with a dull senseless rhythm that came and vanished and came again all throughout the long and mundane hours of that day. To the south he passed the constant balding hills where the wind combed what slight grass was left over the red clay and stones of the soft damp earth. Further yet there stood lines of windmills which churned soundlessly and methodically like some kind of alien scout or centurion set to stand guard and ward off some unfathomable thing that had not yet been culled into being.

On October 5th, 2009 I packed up my beloved, trusted, abused Mitsubishi Galant Sheila with what things I could; 8 pairs of shoes/boots, 5 bags of clothes, 3 boxes of DVDs, 2 boxes of books and 1 good friend then left St. Louis, Missouri for Redwood City, California. I'm starting this blog with pictures from that drive, after that I'll jump time as I see fit, present, past, future, whatever pictures I feel like posting next.
